21 year old London singer-songwriter Malory Torr is often described as ‘fresh and insightful’. Malory has a eclectic sound using a combination of guitar, ukulele and piano to create her indie/alternative pop originals. In October 2014 she became the first artist to sign to Metropolis Music Publishing, the latest arm of Europe’s leading studio complex. Malory has also supported George Ezra at his debut album launch and Dry The River on their UK tour.
Malory has just released her first EP ‘A Joker And A Thief’ which is available to download and stream across all major music sites. The EP consists of amazing songs with a rock side. But next to that the singer-songwriter skills of Malory are really outstanding, which makes us think of Torres or PJ Harvey. A new British goddess has risen. It’s an amazing EP that definitely deserves more attention around the world.

What is your all-time favorite song?
It’s too hard to say but I know Dylan’s ‘Song to Woody’ would be in my top ten. It’s just the most beautiful, simple, well crafted melody and just always overwhelms me with a feeling of contentment and hope when I listen to it.
What song is perfect for a Road Trip?
‘Alice’s Restaurant’ by Arlo Guthrie, it’s about 18 minutes long and takes you through the most incredible hilarious story, the type of story which should be made into a Coen brothers movie. It’s likely to keep you entertained for a good while on the road…
On which song do you like to clean?
‘I Feel Good’ by James Brown so I can sweep up like Mrs. Doubtfire, haha.
What’s the perfect song to wake up with?
‘Early Morning Riser’ by The Weepies, it immediately puts you in a good mood and makes you wanna dance around in your pyjamas.
What’s your favorite artist from your home city?
Well I grew up in London but was born in Johannesburg. I think it would be too hard to choose just one London artist so I’ll go for South Africa and my immensely talented cousin Josie Field. She has the most stunning unique voice and her songwriting has inspired me so much throughout my life. I love the honesty in her lyrics and her melodies are so special they’ve become ingrained in me.
Which artist do you think is too underrated and which one is overrated?
The Weepies! Their songs are unbelievably awesome and hardly anyone has heard of them!! Luckily they’ve been soundtracked on loads of films and TV shows but they’re not really mainstream so if you know them, you can be my friend. I love their harmonies and arrangements plus their lyrics are always quirky or truly touching.
Hmmm overrated is tricky.. FKA Twigs would be one of my choices… I love her whole image and think she is very creative and artistic but I just can’t hear the songs. If you read the lyrics she’s really not saying anything at all and most of the songs sound pretty similar which is kinda boring after a little while.
If you could be one artist for a day, who would that be?
Chance the Rapper, he’s so unbelievably loveable not to mention hilarious, I’d love to see inside his brain. I can imagine he would have an awesome group of people around him that would be so much fun to hang out with too.
What’s the best song to make love to? (…to ask someone out?)
I can’t say that I’ve ever made a conscious effort to listen to something whilst making out with someone.. To ask someone out I’d probably use Avril Lavigne ‘Girlfriend’ or ‘Love Machine’ by Girls Aloud though, haha…
What’s the most beautiful lyric you’ve ever heard?
That’s a hard one, there are so many!! I adore Damien Rice’s song ‘The Animals Were Gone’ but particularly the lines :
The window’s open now and the winter settles in
We’ll call it Christmas when the adverts begin
I love your depression and I love your double chin
I love ‘most everything that you bring to this offering
It’s so honest and real. But it’s also wonderfully romantic without being cheesy. The imagery it con jours up is so vivid and filmic too.
At which place would you love to play a concert?

Madison Square Gardens in New York. To play at such a prestigious venue to thousands of people is certainly one of my life goals, plus I love America so to be accepted there would be a huge thing for me.

Wat is jouw favoriete nummer?
Dat is veel te moeilijk om te zeggen maar Dylan’s ‘Song to Woody’ zou zeker in mijn top tien zitten. Het is de meest schone, simpele en best gemaakte melodie ooit. Het overweldigt me altijd met een gevoel van tevredenheid en hoop wanneer ik er naar luister.
Wat is het perfecte nummer voor een roadtrip?
‘Alice’s Restaurant’ door Arlo Guthrie, het duur ongeveer 18 minuten en het neemt je mee door een geweldig en hilarisch verhaal. Het soort verhaal dat zou moeten gemaakt worden in een film van de Coen broers. Het blijft je entertainen voor een tijdje op de weg.
Op welk nummer maak je graag schoon?

Ik groeide op in Londen maar werd geboren in Johannesburg. Ik denk dat het te moeilijk zou worden om slechts één artiest uit Londen te kiezen dus kies ik voor mijn erg getalenteerde Zuid-Afrikaanse nicht Josie Field. Ze heeft een erg verbluffende en unieke stem en haar songwriting heeft mij veel geïnspireerd doorheen mijn leven. Ik hou van de eerlijkheid in haar songteksten en haar melodieën zijn zo speciaal dat ze bij mezelf zijn ingebakken.
Welke artiest is underrated en wie is overrated?
The Weepies! Hun nummers zijn ongelooflijk goed en bijna niemand heeft al van hen gehoord!! Gelukkig waren ze al de soundtrack voor veel films en tv shows. Maar ze zijn niet mainstream dus als je ze kent, dan kan je mijn vriend worden! Ik hou van hun harmonieën en hun songteksten zijn heel eigenzinnig en rakend.

Wat is het beste nummer om bij te vrijen? (iemand mee uit te vragen?)
Ik kan niet zeggen dat ik al een bewuste poging heb ondernomen om naar een nummer te luisteren terwijl ik vrijde met iemand. Maar als ik iemand zou uitvragen met een nummer zou ik kiezen voor Avril Lavigne ‘Girlfriend’ of ‘Love Machine’ door Girls Aloud, haha…
Wat is de mooiste songtekst die je ooit hebt gehoord?
Dat is een moeilijke vraag, er zijn zoveel mooie!! Ik hou van het nummer “The Animals Were Gone” van Damien Rice’s en vooral de volgende lijnen:

Het is zo eerlijk en zo echt. Maar het is ook waanzinnig romatisch zonder melig te zijn. De verbeelding But it’s also wonderfully romantic without being cheesy. De verbeelding veert op en het is tegelijk levendig en filmisch.
