Heron is a post-rock instrumental collective hailing from northwestern Pennsylvania. Their transcendent sound blends resonant, melodic elements with darker and more ambient tones.
Heron’s debut release, You Are Here Now, is an emotionally evocative and vividly dynamic musical narrative with underpinnings that call to mind This Will Destroy You, Sigur Ros, The Appleseed Cast, and Pink Floyd. The album was mixed by Matt Bayles (Minus the Bear, Pearl Jam, Caspian, Russian Circles) and comes on January 21st. Recorded live, it is more of a composite sound experience than a series of songs, and its spacious vibes blur the lines of generic appeal, engaging listeners of diverse ages and musical tastes. Evident in the band’s rich and swelling expression is their passion for authenticity, goodness, and beauty, and their love for the wild outdoors.
Heron is Ben Blick and Boyd Lewis (guitars), Eric Morelli (bass), and Nate Blick (drums and percussion).
We love this kind of post rock so we got our questions answered by Boyd and Ben –
What is your all-time favorite song?
Ohhhh boy. All time goes back to rock and roll! “Whole Lotta Love” by Led Zeppelin. The break in the middle with just noise and chaos – then right back in to Jimmy’s guitar….gives me goosebumps every single time.
Which song is perfect for a Road Trip?
I’m going to use one of our songs for this: “Shores” – It moves your emotions and gives you drive to aim for your destination. The song brings to mind the wonder and mystery of everything you are passing by at 75 MPH.
To which song do you like to clean?
“Shake A Leg” – AC/DC. Have you ever tried to not move around when this is on? Angus is the man!
What’s the perfect song to wake up with?
“Perth” by Bon Iver. It just sounds like a soundtrack to the way every morning should be. It’s wonderful.
What’s your favorite artist from your home city?
Company Townes. Their music has captured the sound of Pennsylvania. It’s not everyday a band can pull off three-part harmonies live – even better than on the album. Rock, Blues, Folk and local….what’s not to love? They just released their first full length album “Canyon”. Two members of Heron are a part of this group as well.
Which artist do you think is too underrated and which one is overrated?
Underrated: Chad Lehr. This guy is the best kept secret from Indianapolis, IN. He’s a great writer, and loves what he does. That comes out on everything I’ve heard from him.
Overrated: Turn the radio on and pick one! There’s a documentary called The Wrecking Crew – everyone should watch that.
If you could be one artist for a day, who would that be?
I would not switch places with anyone! This might not be a great answer to an interview question, but I’d rather have Heron be a bright little blip on the radar than anything else.
What’s the best song to make love to? (…to ask someone out?)
“Andvari” by Sigur Ros from the Takk album – My(Ben) wife walked down the wedding aisle to this song.
What’s the most beautiful lyric you’ve ever heard?
The beginning of “Next to Me” by Sleeping At Last: “Our futures were written with crayons and coloring books. It was misspelled and outside the lines, but we loved how it looked.” Listen to that song if you get a minute.
At which place would you love to play a concert?
This would be everyone’s answer probably, but Red Rocks. Our music fits with the great outdoors. That place is amazing.
