CLAVVS is a band that almost wasn’t. If not for a chance meeting at a house party in Atlanta one summer night in 2013, Amber Renee might never have met Graham Marsh, and the pair might never have realized their shared love for hiphop and Radiohead. Neither could have guessed that that same love would evolve into a musical partnership fronted by Amber and produced by Graham, the four-time Grammy winner behind artists like Gnarls Barkley, Bruno Mars, and T.I. The independent alt-pop duo put out their debut album Feel It All in April 2015. CLAVVS most recently released their new single “Sit You Down” on September 15.
“Sit You Down” is the first single from the forthcoming halfblood EP, the follow-up to CLAVVS’ debut album Feel It All. After a case of mistaken identity, CLAVVS (formerly CLAWS) changed the spelling of their name to distinguish themselves from other groups with the same moniker. But really, it’s their music that sets them apart. If “Sit You Down” is any indication, the duo is departing from the mainly organic production of their first album and into a realm of dark, hypnotic alt-pop driven by spacey synths and rhapsodic drums. Given that half of CLAVVS is Graham Marsh, it makes sense that the duo is navigating more progressive, urban waters. With Amber Renee’s sultry, at times eerie, vocals floating atop the organized chaos, CLAVVS has stumbled upon new terrain that just might catapult them into more mainstream success in 2016. halfblood will be revealed episodically, one song at a time, until its release in Spring of 2016.

Although Graham won several Grammy’s, he’s still very down to earth, that’s why he and his bandmate Amber answered our questions (with a slight change at some questions).
What is your all-time favorite song?
Amber: “New Slang” by the Shins. James Mercer is probably the most influential musician to my art. That song just sort of defines my youth in a lot of ways, and hearing it never gets old. A close second would be “Spectacular Views” by Rilo Kiley.
Graham: Yeah, that’s a tough decision, but probably “Tomorrow Never Knows” by the Beatles. It was my first experience with psychedelic music as a kid, so it’s been pretty influential on me.
What album is perfect for a Road Trip?
A: I’m all about the new Sylvan Esso self-titled record. There are so many different, beautiful moments on it. “Dress” and “Play It Right” will have you dancing and “Could I Be” will move you through the world and “Come Down” will get you thinking deeply about your life. It’s such a great record.
G: I love the new Tame Impala record Currents. I’d drive to that. Specifically “Cause I’m a Man.” It’s a chill song to cruise to.
On which album do you like to clean?
A: My favorite album to clean to recently is Broken Bells’ After the Disco. I know all of the songs by heart, so I’m just singing along while I work. It’s the perfect mix between dance and chill vibes.
G: Right now mine is the song “Best Friend” by Young Thug.
What’s the perfect song to wake up with?
A: Anything by Janelle Monae and the Wondaland crew. We just saw them perform at One Music Fest here in Atlanta. They completely stole the show. I love “Classic Man” by Jidenna, but Janelle’s “Tightrope” is my favorite. The energy will make you jump out of bed like you’re about to run the world.
G: “54-56 Was My Number” by Toots and The Maytals. It’ll put a little pep in your step.
What’s your favorite artist from your home city?
A & G: We’re from Atlanta, so Run the Jewels for sure. Killer Mike & El-P make a dope team, but really it’s about the truth they speak. We’re a similarly conscious group. We value our independence and the freedom to say what we want, and that’s something RtJ never fails to do. They talk about real issues that need to be addressed, politically, socially and spiritually. I’m proud they rep ATL that way. It inspires us to do the same.
Which artist do you think is too underrated?
A: I think one of the most underrated artists of our time is Lady Gaga. A lot of people hate on her and call her music shallow or pretentious or reductive, but I think she is the dopest popstar of all time. Not only is she a killer pop performer, but she can turn around and slay the standards with Tony Bennett. And she gives zero fucks about what people think about her, so she uses that ethos to change the world with her cultural power. That’s pretty rad.
G: I’d say Fela Kuti is woefully underrated. He’s the father afro-beat music, which has influenced countless other modern forms of music. But so many people have no idea who he is or what he’s done for modern music. He was an incredible musician.
If you could be one artist for a day, who would that be?
A & G: We’re influenced by so many artists, but honestly, we wouldn’t really want to be anyone else. There’s a certain enigma about never knowing what it’s like to be another human. That’s what makes individuality so special and art so compelling. We don’t want to peak behind that veil.
What’s the best song to make love to? (…to ask someone out?)
A: The sexiest song of all time is Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game.” That voice, that music video– it’s dark and seductive and gorgeous. That was also the first cover song we ever did together as CLAVVS. A close second is “Killing Me Softly” by the Fugees.
What’s the most beautiful lyric you’ve ever heard?
A: “Mad World” is probably one of the most tragically beautiful songs ever written. It speaks so succinctly to the human experience in the modern era. It’s so relatable to me. “And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad / the dreams in which I’m dying are the best I’ve ever had / I find it hard to tell you, I find it hard to take / when people run in circles it’s a very, very mad world.”
At which place would you love to play a concert?
A & G: It’s tie between Red Rocks and Madison Square Garden. Red Rocks is our top outdoor pick because it’s magical and gorgeous. Madison Square Garden is our indoor choice because it’s Madison Square Garden, probably the most legendary venue of all time.

A: Ik denk dat één van de meest ondergewaarde artiesten van onze tijd Lady Gaga is. Veel mensen haten haar en noemen haar muziek leef, pretentieus of simpel. Maar ik denk dat ze één van de beste popsterren aller tijden is. Ze is niet alleen een fantastische popzangeres maar ze kan ook dingen anders doen en de standaarden doorbreken met Tony Bennett. Ze kijkt ook helemaal niet naar wat mensen van haar denken, dus ze gebruikt dat om de wereld te veranderen met haar culturele krachten. Dat is vrij cool.
G: Ik vind Fela Kuti immens ondergewaardeerd. Hij is de vader van de afro-beat dat ontelbare andere vormen van muziek heeft beïnvloedt. Maar heel veel mensen hebben geen idee wat hij betekend heeft voor de moderne muziek, hij was een geweldige muzikant.
If you could be one artist for a day, who would that be?
A & G: We zijn beïnvloedt door heel veel artiesten, maar eerlijk, we zouden niet echt iemand anders willen zijn. Er is een soort raadsel dat hangt rond het zijn van een ander persoon. Dat is wat individualiteit zo speciaal maakt en kunst zo dwingend. We zouden niet graag gluren achter die sluier.
