Virtu is an electronic DJ and producer coming from LA. His music can be defined as “excellence or merit in the objects of art, curios, and the like”. This suits well for Jon Sprott (VIRTU) for he strives to produce and perform only the most euphoric niches of electronic music. “I grew up in Southern California just out of LA in Santa Clarita. Music has always been a huge part of my life. I started classical piano lessons when I was 5 years old and didn’t stop until I was 17. I picked up guitar in my early teen years and joined a band when I was 13. I had been in and out of bands for a few years until 2008 when I dove deep into electronic music after being inspired by Moby at Electric Daisy Carnival that year. Things changed drastically for me in 2008 and I’ve been on the electronic path ever since.”
What is your all-time favorite song?
Nine Inch Nails – Right Where It Belongs. The first time I heard this song and paid attention to the lyrics, it started to change my perspective on how I view the entire world in general. No other piece of music has had that profound of an affect on me.
What song is perfect for a Road Trip?
Madeon – The City. This song wreaks of adventure. 😉
On which song do you like to clean?
Mat Zo feat. The Knocks – Get Down 2 Get Up. It’s a track that can make whatever I’m doing enjoyable haha!
What’s the perfect song to wake up with?
Deadmau5 – Fn Pig. The intro is long and euphoric as your opening your eyes, and when the beat finally comes in, it’s exactly what you need to get you out of bed.
What’s your favorite artist from your home city?
I’d have to say Skrillex is the best thing to come out of LA, to my knowledge. I’m not too sure of artists whereabouts, to be honest, but he’s definitely had a huge impact on my music and millions of others. That’s something to look up to, whether you like his style or not.
Which artist do you think is underrated and which one is overrated?
I would say Space Laces is highly underrated. His production skill is off the charts compared to so many people that are bigger than him. No one is overrated. Artists are only underrated.
If you could be one artist for a day, who would that be?
It’d be fun to be Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails. I like the fact that he has his feet wet in both the artist and film scoring world. That’s how I’d like to do things eventually.

What’s the most beautiful lyric you’ve ever heard?
“When you look at your reflection, is that all you want to be? What if you could look right through the cracks? Would you find yourself afraid to see?” – Nine Inch Nails (Right Where It Belongs).
I love this lyric because it is so empowering on many levels. It helped me become a better person in all aspects of life. It’s not saying “change yourself”. It’s simply saying “take a look at yourself and see if you can do better than that.”
At which place would you love to play a concert?
I would do just about anything to play at the Los Angeles Coliseum. That’s where I found my passion for electronic music and it would be amazing to bring it full circle there again. I’m not sure if they do big concerts there anymore though unfortunately.

Dit past perfect bij Jon Sprott want hij streeft er naar om enkel de meest euforische niches van de elektronische muziek te produceren en brengen. “Ik groeide op in het zuiden van Californië net buiten Los Angeles in Santa Clarita. Muziek is altijd een groot deel van mij leven geweest. Ik startte met klassieke pianolessen wanneer ik vijf jaar oud was en stopte hier niet mee tot aan mijn zeventiende. Ik nam de gitaar op in mijn jonge tienerjaren en werd lid van een band op mijn dertienden. Ik ging voortduren in en uit bands tot ik in 2008 Moby aan het werk zag en ik werd gebeten door elektronische muziek. Hierdoor veranderden dingen heel drastisch voor mij en ben ik sindsdien het elektronische pad op gegaan.
Wat is jouw favoriete nummer?
Nine Inch Nails – Right Where It Belongs. De eerste keer dat ik dit nummer hoorde en luisterde naar de songteksten veranderde mijn perspectief op hoe ik de hele wereld in het algemeen zou zien. Geen enkel ander stuk muziek heeft zo’n groot effect op mij.
Wat is het perfecte nummer voor een roadtrip?

Wie is jouw favoriete artiest uit je thuisstad en wat is zo speciaal aan hen?
Ik moet gewoon zeggen dat Skrillex het beste is wat uit LA is gekomen, naar mijn weten. Ik ben niet zo zeker van de woonplaatsen van artiesten om eerlijk te zijn maar hij heeft zeker een grote impact gehad op mijn muziek en miljoenen anderen.
Welke artiest is underrated en wie is overrated?
Ik vind Space Laces heel zwaar ondergewaardeerd. Zijn productie-skills zijn buiten proportie in vergelijking met vele andere artiesten die groter zijn dan hem. Niemand is overgewaardeerd, artiesten zijn enkel ondergewaardeerd.
Als je voor één dag een artiest zou kunnen zijn, wie zou dat zijn?
Het zou leuk zijn om Trent Reznor van Nine Inch Nails te zijn. Ik hou van het feit dat hij zowel in de muziek als filmwereld voet aan grond heeft. Zo wil ik dingen ook doen in de toekomst.

Ik hou van deze songtekst omdat het zoveel kracht heeft op zoveel niveaus. het hielp mij om een betere persoon te komen in alle aspecten van het leven. Het zegt niet “verander jezelf”, maar wel “Kijk naar jezelf en kijk of je beter kan doen dan wat je nu doet.”
Op welke plaats zou je ooit een concert willen spelen?
Ik zou echt alles doen om eens in het Los Angeles Coliseum te spelen. Dat is de plaats waar ik mijn passie voor elektronische muziek heb gevonden en het zou geweldig zijn om mijn muziek daar te brengen. Ik ben wel niet zeker of ze daar nog grote concerten doen eigenlijk.
