The Dunwells are a Leeds based four-piece made up of brothers Joe Dunwell (Vocal, Guitar) and Dave Dunwell (Vocal, Guitar) together with Rob Clayton (Bass) and Adam Taylor (Drums). They were drawn together by their shared love of bands like Bon Iver, Elbow and Damien Rice and they’ve been making music together since they first met in school. The band have unveiled their latest track ‘Hey Now’, which came out September 4th on Decca/Concord.The track is the first off the band’s new album, due early 2016.
“Hey Now” is a gospel-tinged indie-pop anthem, which highlights the incredible collective vocal ability of the band. Led by Joe Dunwell, the chorus is chanted, flowing through layers of harmonies over a swooning instrumental, proving that the band’s song writing continues to evolve and grow stronger.
With their latest EP Lucky Ones hitting over a million streams on Spotify, the band is becoming really popular in the world. Also thanks to the help of producer Stephen Harris (U2, Kaiser Chiefs and The Wombats), songwriters Blair MacKichan (Sia) and James Flannigan (Kodaline), and Manny Marroquin (Kanye West, Rihanna, Pink) who captured their best ideas on the new songs. Following appearances at Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Bonnaroo Festival and Late Night With Jay Leno, the four-piece have toured extensively in the UK, including multiple sell-out dates.
The singer of the band, Joe Dunwell, has a busy schedule. But he found some time to answer some questions for us.
What is your all-time favorite song?
I would have to say, Georgia on my mind by Ray Charles, I remember watching the film ‘Ray’ over and over and over again. I became quite obsessed with all of Ray Charles’ back catalogue. His voice just hit me hard, it made me want to be a better singer, it made me want to try harder. I believe ever word he is singing ‘Georgia’ Every time I listen to it I’m like, that’s perfect, he’s perfect, the tone of his voice, the way he sings every word with passion. I want to do that and achieve that in our songs.
What song is perfect for a Road Trip?
Holocene by Bon Iver, it was my most listened to song when we were touring America, when ever we would drive in to a new state or a new place I would put Holocene on. It would make me reflect on how lucky I am.
On which song do you like to clean?
When I clean I tend to listen to something that has no words Like Jon Hopkins, no cleaning actually gets done if I’m singing along to music. I tend to stand in front of the mirror and pretend I’m on stage, hence why no words. But still great music.
What’s the perfect song to wake up with?
It has to be Elbow, One Day Like this, I am probably one of the biggest fans of Elbow and I think this song is good enough to start anyone’s day!!
What’s your favorite artist from your home city?
There’s a band called City of Lights, not many people have heard of them yet, but they will. They are great, pure passion and raw energy.
Which artist do you think is underrated and which one is overrated?
I think the most underrated artist at the moment would have to be Foy Vance, I mean talk about a Voice, I’ve seen him live twice and supported him once, and every time I have been ridiculously Drunk. He is immense and a really nice guy to boot.
I wouldn’t say overrated, but just not a massive fan of One Direction, never have been and probably never will be.
If you could be one artist for a day, who would that be?
I would love to be Chris Martin of Coldplay, especially during the time they were on the Milo Xyloto tour, with the wrist bands the flashed, in the audience. Those shows looked amazing. I would love to stand on a stage that big one day and have that many people singing my songs back to me.
What’s the best song to make love to? (…to ask someone out?)
My favorite Love song is Damien Rice’s Blowers Daughter, it’s the line in the song, I can’t take my Eyes off of you. It’s beautiful.
What’s the most beautiful lyric you’ve ever heard?

At which place would you love to play a concert?
We once played a show as a support at the Ampithere ‘Red Rocks’ in Colorado, it was incredible. I would love to play there again, for our own head line show.

Wat is jouw favoriete nummer?
Ik zou zeggen, Georgia on my mind door Ray Charles, ik herinner me dat ik de film ‘Ray’ steeds opnieuw bekeek. Hierdoor werd ik geobsedeerd door alles wat Ray Charles ooit maakte. Zijn stem maakte een grote indruk om mij, het zorgde ervoor dat ik zelf een betere zanger wilde worden, ik ging harder proberen. Ik gelood ieder woord dat hij zingt in “Georgia”, iedere keer dat ik er naar luister denk ik: Dat is perfect, hij is perfect, de toon van zijn stem de manier waarop hij ieder woord met passie zingt. Ik wil dat ook doen en dat bereiken met onze nummers.
Wat is het perfecte nummer voor een roadtrip?
Holocene door Bon Iver, het was mijn meest beluisterde nummer toen we door Amerika tourden. Telkens wanneer we naar een nieuwe staat of plaats reden zette ik Holocene op. Het deed me reflecteren op hoe gelukkig ik ben.
Op welk nummer maak je graag schoon?
Wanneer ik kuis, dan durf ik wel eens luisteren naar iets zonder woorden te luisteren zoals Jon Hopkins. Het zou nooit lukken om op te ruimen als ik zing met muziek. Ik zou dan voor de spiegel staan en denken dat ik op het podium sta. Dus het beste is zonder woorden, maar ook geweldige muziek.
Wat is het perfecte nummer om mee wakker te worden?
Dat moet Elbow – “One Day Like This zijn” ik ben hoogstwaarschijnlijk één van de grootste fans van Elbow en ik denk dat dit nummer de beste manier is om iemand zijn dag mee te starten.
Wie is jouw favoriete artiest uit je thuisstad en wat is zo speciaal aan hen?
Er is een band genaamd City of Lights, niet veel mensen hebben al van hen gehoord, maar dat zullen ze wel nog doen. Ze zijn geweldig, pure passie en rauwe energie.
Welke artiest is underrated en wie is overrated?
Ik denk dat de meest ondergewaardeerde artiest Foy Vance is. Ik spreek over zijn stem, ik heb hem al twee keer live gezien en één keer in het voorprogramma gestaan. Iedere keer was ik immens dronken, maar hij is gigantisch en een vriendelijke man om iets mee op te starten.
Ik zou niet zeggen overgewaardeerd, maar ik ben geen grote fan van One Direction, nooit geweest en ik zal dat hoogstwaarschijnlijk nooit zijn.
Als je voor één dag een artiest zou kunnen zijn, wie zou dat zijn?
Ik zou heel graag eens Chris Martin van Coldplay zijn, vooral tijden hun Milo Xyloto tour met die lichtgevende armbandjes in het publiek. Deze shows zagen er geweldig uit, ik zou maar al te graag eens op zo’n groot podium staan en zoveel mensen hebben die met ons meezingen.
Wat is het beste nummer om bij te vrijen? (iemand mee uit te vragen?)
Mijn favoriete liefdesnummer is Damien Rice’s Blowers Daughter, het is die ene lijn in dat nummer: “I can’t take my Eyes off of you”, wondermooi!
Wat is de mooiste songtekst die je ooit hebt gehoord?

Op welke plaats zou je ooit een concert willen spelen?
We speelden ooit eens als voorprogramma in het amphitheater ‘Red Rocks’ in Colorado, dat was geweldig. Ik zou daar maar al te graag eens opnieuw spelen, maar dan als hoofdact.
