Still catching their breath after taking the BBC Introducing stage by storm at Reading & Leeds, Brighton’s Demob Happy have revealed ‘Junk DNA’ / ‘Suffer You’ as their new AA-side single. Each taken from their anticipated debut album, Dream Soda, (due for release on October 2nd via SO Recordings), both tracks lock horns on a bold psychic journey through the back alleys of garage-rock. Asserting their impulsive garage rock clatter across numerous single and EP releases through last year, Dream Soda offers a turbo charged collection of contrasts: tough and tender, melodic and malevolent, sweet and sour. Recently the NME welcomed Dream Soda’s first single, ‘Wash It Down’, as no exception to their fierce title of delivering “some of the most riff-heavy songs of recent years”, and has also been championed by the likes of The Independent, Best Fit, The 405, BBC Radio 1 and XFM.
Birthed in the blackened Welsh winter of 2014, Dream Soda is the consequence of four young men isolating themselves from the perils of the outside world to embark upon a hypnotic and relentless two-month long jam. Stranded in a desolate cottage in the Carmarthenshire valley, the band worked on their own terms to craft a 12-track escape before heading to Electric Zoo studios to lay the tracks to tape. It was produced and recorded by the band and their long-time studio aide Christoph Skirl, mixed by Anthony Theaker of Pulled Apart By Horses acclaim, and mastered by John Davis (Led Zeppelin, Primal Scream, Royal Blood).
Following a recent stint through Europe supporting Death From Above 1979, and appearances at Reading & Leeds festivals, Demob Happy will embark upon a UK headline tour through December.
Singer of the band, Matt, decided to answer our questions.
What is your all-time favorite song and why?
‘Music was my first love’ by John Miles. Really, whats not to like? It does everything you want it to, you go on a journey, you feel the truth of his words and the passion of his life. Its a song to do 6 minute improvised dance routines to in your living room.
What song is perfect for a Road Trip?
if your driving during the day, you need party music like Eagles of Death Metal, if you hit the night time and your still driving, go with some Neu! or some Faithless.
On which song do you like to clean?
Anything by Queen, maybe ‘I Want To Break Free’ because it has that strut to it thats the perfect tempo for marching around your house getting work done.
What’s the perfect song to wake up with?
I like to listen to classical music at night, so whatever’s playing on BBC Radio 3 when I wake up. It kinda all sounds the same anyway…
What’s your favorite artist from your home city?
Lindisfarne, no question, and their album ‘Nicely out of Tune’ from 1970. Nobody else in the entire world did folk harmonies, melodies, lyrics and grooves as good as these guys, and they’re words inspired a lot of positive change in Newcasle. Mumford and Sons go eat a dick and think about what you’ve done.
Which artist do you think is underrated and which one is overrated?
Archie Bronson Outfit are underrated.
95% of music that is out now is overrated, because people dont know what good music is anymore. Or The Smiths, always them.
If you could be one artist for a day, who would that be?
Tina Turner back in the Ike and Tina Turner days. She was a force of pure unfiltered musical energy and sex appeal.
What’s the best song to make love to? (…to ask someone out?)
Anything by Sebastien Tellier from ‘Sexuality’. It’s all sex noises anyway, so its not hard to get you in the right headspace.
What’s the most beautiful lyric you’ve ever heard?
When the wind is singing strangely,
Blowing music through your head,
And your rain splattered windows,
Make you decide to stay in bed,
Do you spare a thought for the homeless tramp who wishes he was dead?
‘Winter’s Song’ by Lindisfarne. I dont listen to lyrics, I dont really care what other people say, but these have always enraptured my soul.
At which place would you love to play a concert?
I’d love to play a concert in the middle of nowhere in the dessert of Mexico at night so you can see the stars. Can you book that please?

Demob Happy komt nog steeds op adem nadat ze op Reading & Leeds de BBC Introducing stage hebben afgebroken. Enkele dagen geleden bracht de band uit Brighton’s hun single ‘Junk DNA’ / ‘Suffer You’ uit. De nummers komen op hun debuutplaat , Dream Soda, dat op 2 oktober via SO Recordings uitkomt. De twee liedjes nemen je mee op een psychedelische trip door de steegjes van de garage-rock. Hun garagerock laten ze dan ook duidelijk gelden doorheen verschillende singles en EP releases. Dream Soda biedt een turbo aan contrasten aan: taai en teder, melodieus en kwaadwillig, zoet en zuur. De eerste single van Dream Soda ‘Wash It Down’, werd door NME “some of the most riff-heavy songs of recent years” genoemd.
Dream Soda ontstond op een zwarte winterdag in Wales. Het album is dan ook het logische gevolg van vier jonge mannen die zich twee maanden isoleerden van de gevaren in de buitenwereld. Een hypnotische en meedogenloze jam was het gevolg. De band strandde in een verlaten huisje in de Carmarthenshire vallei, waar de band op hun eigen manier een 12 nummer lange demo maakte waarna ze naar de nummers op tape zetten. Het album werd geproduceerd en opgenomen door Christoph Skirl, gemixt door Anthony Theaker van Pulled Apart By Horses, en gemasterd door John Davis (Led Zeppelin, Primal Scream, Royal Blood).
Nadat de band in het voorprogramma van Death From Above 1979 kwam in Europa, zal je hen binnenkort aan het werk kunnen zien op het Glimps festival in Gent.

Wat is jouw favoriete nummer?
‘Music was my first love’ door John Miles. Echt, wat is er daar nu niet goed aan te vinden? Het doet alles wat je wil, je gaat op een reis, je voelt de waarheid van zijn woorden en de passie van zijn leven. Het is een nummer om een zes minuten lange, verzonnen dans op te doen.
Wat is het perfecte nummer voor een roadtrip?
Als je tijdens de dag rijdt dan heb je feestmuziek nodig zoals Eagles of Death Metal, als het nacht wordt en je nog steeds rijdt dan moet je Neu! beluisteren of Faithless.
Op welk nummer maak je graag schoon?
Alles door Queen, misschien het beste op ‘I Want To Break Free’ omdat dat nummer het perfecte tempo bevat voor rond te wandelen en tegelijk op te ruimen.

Ik hou ervan om naar klassieke muziek te luisteren ’s nachts, dus alles wat speelt op BBC Radio 3 (Klara van Verenigd Koninkrijk) is goed om mee wakker te worden. Het klink toch allemaal hetzelfde…
Wie is jouw favoriete artiest uit je thuisstad?
Lindisfarne, zonder twijfel, en hun album ‘Nicely out of Tune’ van uit 1970. Niemand anders in de hele wereld kan folk harmonieën, melodieën, songteksten en grooves zo goed maken als deze gasten. Hun woorden inspireerden positieve veranderingen in Newcastle. Ga weg Mumford & Sons en denk maar eens na over wat jullie hebben gedaan!
