Vragen van “Den Beir”: Izzy Flynn

Izzy Flynn

Inspired by Joni Mitchell, Lauryn Hill, Frederic Chopin, Esperanza Spalding, Nina Simone, Keith Jarrett, it is fair to say that London born singer/songwriter Izzy Flynn is not an artist who can easily be boxed. Having trained in jazz at Leeds College of Music, Izzy’s own style is a fusion of the freeform musicality of her learning and the structural accuracy of Da Vinci’s body series.

Alongside the Abstract Orchestra – an all-star Hip-Hop Big Band made of the finest musicians in the UK that have recorded and toured with the top acts in the world (Amy Winehouse, Jamiroquai, Submotion Orchestra) – Izzy Flynn has performed around the world. Most recently they supported Mos Def, De La Soul and Afrika Bambaataa. Izzy Flynn, who graduated with a First Class Honours and Composition Award on the BA Jazz Degree at Leeds College of Music, and was recognised in Jazzwise Magazine for conducting her ‘most original’ (Brian Priestly) Big Band Composition is ready to make a mark on the music world in her own terms.

Primarily influenced by Electronic, Jazz and R&B styles, with rich harmonies and memorable melodies, Izzy Flynn’s dark, alluring, current sound has been likened to that of James Blake, BANKS and FKA Twigs. Akin to the aforementioned, Izzy Flynn curates every aspect of her creative output. Not just a singer/songwriter, she takes inspiration from her icon Joni Mitchell, and realises that an artist is someone who is aware of a project complete. While she writes both the music and lyrics, she also performs all keyboard, synth, lead vocal and backing vocals herself. She is heavily involved in the music production and her own artistic styling.

What is your all-time favourite song?

‘Case of You’ by Joni Mitchell. There’s so many things about this song that move me. Joni is a vocal acrobat, who sings/sails with ease and crisp clarity. She carves her story/melodies with ideas, metaphors and clues in an abstractly poetic style.

Which song is perfect for a Road Trip?

Tootes and the Maytals – ‘Pressure Drop’ – a great singalong song!

To which song do you like to clean?

Shy FX – ‘Shake your body’, gets your feet movin’!

What’s the perfect song to wake up with?

Extreme – ‘More than Words’ – I think its one of the greatest songs ever.

What’s your favourite artist from your home city?

Jamie Woon from New Malden, south west London. His electronic sound is so smooth. I love his vocal rhythms, lush chords, production, instrumentation, everything!

Which artist do you think is too underrated and which one is overrated?

There’s a great UK band called ‘Where Fires Are’ who definitely deserve a lot of attention with their excellent song writing and explosive stage presence. They remind me of one of my favourite bands Incubus, and Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Well worth checking out.

Honestly, I think any artist who has gone far in their career has done it through a lot of hard work, so I wouldn’t like to say someone is overrated. (I know thats not the fun answer sorry!)

If you could be one artist for a day, who would that be?

Throwing a curveball here: Leonardo Da Vinci, a genius, a scientist and a phenomenal painter. Or musical artist: Stevie wonder; rhythmic chops of gold!

What’s the best song to make love to? (…to ask someone out?)

HAHA! Definitely no comment. I’m a lady!

What’s the most beautiful lyric you’ve ever heard?

From Joni Mitchell’s song ‘Case of you’: ‘I remember that time you told me you said / “love is touching souls” / Surely you touched mine…’. I think this is a touching way of describing love.

At which place would you love to play a concert?

Carnegie hall, wouldn’t we all?! 🙂

Carnegie Hall
