Chase Rayment is a musician hailing from Denver, Colorado, but now operating out of Seattle, Washington. His music spans multiple genres, but generally falls within progressive house, post-rock, synthwave, or downtempo. As a guitarist, bassist, and cellist, he incorporates acoustic sounds into his synthwave-inspired beats. Main influences include El Huervo, Perturbator, Disasterpeace, and Chromeo.

We got some sounds from Chase and really appreciated what he does, so we introduce him to you.

What is your all-time favorite song?

This is a tough one to answer, and probably depends heavily on what kind of day you ask me. However I’ve always been inspired by El Huervo’s work, and his track “All About You” definitely defines the sort of vibes I’d love to someday incorporate into my work.

Which song is perfect for a Road Trip?

On long road trips I like to break out my blues rock/metal playlists. Mainly because my car stereo isn’t so great for thumping bass, but also just because there’s something great about going 80mph on an empty highway with nothing but corn fields in sight while blasting a song like “Firebirds” by Clutch.

To which song do you like to clean?

To be honest cleaning is kind of my time for reflection, clearing my head, processing the day I’m having. And I don’t do that so well while listening to music, since I tend to focus too much on the music. If I was to clean to music, though, I’d probably pick something I can kinda zone out to but still enjoy the vibes, like Ivey – “Echoes”.

What’s the perfect song to wake up with?

I’ve found that if I set a song as my alarm, I instantly start hating it. Because then, every damn time I hear that song, a thought goes through my head: “Oh nice, I’m dreaming. Probably gotta wake up soon.” And that’s just a weird and uncomfortable thought to have.

Silly tangents aside, if I had to set a song for my alarm for a month, I’d probably pick CTRL+R – “22”. It’s basically just a giant ball of joy and energy, and even though I’m a very heavy sleeper, I’m pretty sure I’d be awake by the end.

What’s your favorite artist from your home city?

I grew up in a pretty rural part of the country – so the chances of meeting someone who makes electronic music were pretty slim. So it was actually pretty amazing that I got to meet Ken Kubik, better known by his stage name, KÜBE. He’s been putting on some incredible shows all across Colorado, and his SoundCloud is full of some superb Hardcore/DnB. Anyone who can double as an excellent DJ and an excellent producer is quite outstanding in my opinion.

Which artist do you think is too underrated and which one is overrated?

There’s an insane number of underrated artists who deserve their time in the spotlight, but one in particular I’d like to point out is my great friend Tyler Kind. Aside from being an excellent singer/songwriter, he is also a phenomenal visual artist. He does my album and profile art, and he also sang in “Solar Flare” on my newest album. And seriously, I’ve never met anyone with a similar passion for art in all forms as Tyler. He tells me his music is a way for him to express his stories and pose questions about life that he’d like to answer. And listening to his music, that certainly comes through. It’s raw, it’s fun, and it’s powerful.

As for overrated artists, I really don’t believe an artist can be “overrated”. If a bunch of people like someone’s work, then who am I to call them wrong? Sure, there’s plenty of popular artists that I dislike, but obviously some people like them, otherwise they wouldn’t be popular. Some people like rollercoasters. I sure as hell don’t, but that doesn’t mean rollercoasters are overrated – just not my thing.

If you could be one artist for a day, who would that be?

Hmmm. That’s a tough one. I’d have to go with Jasper Byrne. I’m currently in school studying computer science, with hopes to one day work in the game industry. And Jasper Byrne is an inspiring artist to me because he manages to be both an excellent indie game developer as well as a great musician. And if I was him for a day, I think I’d be able to better understand how to tie those two passions of mine together.

What’s the best song to make love to? (…to ask someone out?)

EASY. Daft Punk – “Something About Us”. I don’t think I really have to explain this one.

What’s the most beautiful lyric you’ve ever heard?

Another tough one. I’m generally not the type to pay much attention to lyrics – but if I had to choose, I’d choose some of the lyrics from “Can’t Get It Out Of My Head” by ELO.

“Midnight on the water.
I saw the ocean’s daughter.
Walking on a wave she came,
staring as she called my name.

Breakdown on the shoreline,
can’t move, it’s an ebbtide.
Morning don’t get here tonight,
searching for her silver light.

At which place would you love to play a concert?

I think to me it matters less where I’d play and more who I’m with and who I’d meet there. With that said, if given the chance, it’d be fun to play a concert in Calgary or Vancouver. I’ve been to those cities a few times – enough to feel comfortable with them and know I like them – but not quite enough to rule out any new experiences I’d have there.
