Static in Verona is the work of Rob Merz from Chicago. A real one-man band, although you can’t hear it. He plays all the instruments himself, combining them with electronic elements, and he also produces all songs. His music is guitar-based indie pop with fine, catchy melodies.
On his third album, you can hear this very good. The first two were well thought about and meticulously produced, but on this third album Merz has a looser, more experimental approach. The songs are just as catchy and brilliantly put together, but sound more exciting and yet relaxed at the same time. The opener and first single “Anyone Anymore” instantly sets the right tone. The song reminds us, just like the rest of the album, of the early 90s powerpop of The Posies, and the harmonic indie pop of Teenage Fanclub and Matthew Sweet. Merz has that same quality: writing beautiful compact pop songs in a timeless guitar pop package. The album is filled with those kinds of songs. The fourth track “Blink” is a surprising song, it is darker and you can even call it trippy, containing a heavy guitar sound. Other favourites of the Dansende Beren are the singles “Anyone Anymore”, “Shudder To Think” and “Then A Hush”.

What is your all-time favourite song and why?
Either “Whiter Shade of Pale” by Procol Harum or “Bring It On Home to Me” by Sam Cooke, because they are both perfectly written songs.
What song is perfect for a Road Trip Song and why?
“Girlfriend” by Matthew Sweet. It has a really upbeat rhythm and easy to sing along to.
On which song do you like to clean?
Me and my family clean to “Girl on Fire” by Alicia Keys.
What’s the perfect song to wake up with?
Any song by Beck because it always makes me smile.
What’s your favourite artist from your home city?
Wilco is one of my favourite bands and they are also from Chicago.

The band Lucius should be huge (but they aren’t)
I think the Doors are overrated.

Paul McCartney because he is a living legend.

Red Rocks in Colorado. Its carved into the side of a mountain.

Static in Verona is het werk van Rob Merz uit Chicago. Inderdaad, een echte eenmansband alhoewel dat niet te horen is. Hij speelt alle instrumenten zelf, combineert ze met elektronische elementen en produceert ook nog eens alle songs. Zijn muziek is op gitaar gebaseerde indiepop met fijne, pakkende melodieën.
Dit is ook weer zo op zijn inmiddels derde album. Waren de eerste twee goed uitgedacht en minutieus geproduceerd, bij dit derde album heeft Merz een lossere, meer experimentele aanpak. De songs zijn net zo catchy en briljant in elkaar gezet, maar klinken spannender en ontspannender tegelijk. De opener en eerste single “Anyone Anymore” heeft direct de juiste toon. Het nummer doet, net als de rest van het album trouwens, denken aan de begin jaren ’90 powerpop van The Posies, en de harmonische indiepop van Teenage Fanclub en Matthew Sweet. Merz heeft diezelfde kwaliteit: het schrijven van mooie compacte popliedjes in een tijdloze gitaarpop-verpakking. Het album staat er vol mee. De track “Blink” halverwege het album is een verrassende track, het is donkerder en zelfs trippy te noemen met een zwaar gitaargeluid. Andere favorieten van de Dansende Beren zijn de single “Anyone Anymore”, “Shudder To Think” en “Then A Hush”.
